Many things to know when disinfecting rice at IFC International Fumigation

08/03/2023

Agricultural products rice, cassava, . .. As the main ingredient is starch, rice is easily attacked by insects. Especially, with the "wet rice civilization" being one of the leading countries in exporting rice like Vietnam, rice sterilization is something that many farmers and exporters pay attention to. .

How long the rice can be stored depends on the sterilization process. Agricultural goods before being exported to foreign markets need to be disinfected to completely eliminate existing insects, especially weevils.

1. Some things to learn about rice fumigation at IFC International Fumigation

1.1 Characteristics of rice weevils - natural enemies

Adult rice weevils are about 2 mm long with very large toothed mouths. Body color at first glance is brown or black, but closely observed, there is a reddish yellow color on the upper part of the wing.

Males live over 2 years. A female can lay 300 eggs in her lifetime and they lay 2-6 eggs per day. Weevils punch holes and lay eggs in the holes of rice grains. Larvae that develop in cereals can escape while eating.

Weevils and larvae are killed at temperatures below 0 degrees F (-18 degrees C) for 3 days or heated at 140 degrees F (60 degrees C) for 15 minutes. By eliminating weevils we can separate the grain and weevils.

Distribution and effects: Weevils are present all over the world, where there is food, there are weevils. Tropical countries with hot and humid climates are very suitable for weevils to breed. Rice weevil eats all kinds of crops, grows quickly, has high adaptability to climate and lasts a long time.

The rice weevil has a round head, when eating, cuts a small hole in the proboscis and lays eggs there. The eggs hatch, the young caterpillars grow and eat most of the starch inside the rice, leaving only a thin, useless shell. This is the main destructive insect and is considered the most dangerous to the rice storage in our country. Therefore, exporters must pay attention to disinfecting rice before selling to other countries.

1.2 Rice Disinfectant at IFC

Vietnam is the leading rice exporter in Southeast Asia after Thailand. In order to become a powerhouse in rice export, Vietnam not only improves production capacity but also improves rice quality significantly. And contributing a significant part to the value of exported rice is disinfecting and killing rice weevils. In order to prevent rice, rice, and beans from being infected with weevils, before putting products into the warehouse, it is necessary to fumigate harmful insects on walls, floors, wooden pallets, and on packages.

Insecticides create a barrier that prevents the growth of weevils from outside.

Some people worry that the chemicals used in the sterilization will harm the health of the rice. Because the chemical used to kill weevils in agriculture has the chemical name Aluminum Phosphine (AIP 3) while rice is liquid. Aluminum Phosphine will react with water in the soil and turn into PH3 and solids. PH3 gas will be evenly dispersed in the area to be eliminated and termites will be easily eliminated by this harmful gas. But if you want to see results, 1 week is suitable.
